Apparently someone in Management has asked to see some justification for the move. Interesting, if they actually put some thing down on paper to explain the move, then at least I can attempt to defend against any FUD that been included.
Hmm Reality Check
December 9, 2008 by chairboyrulesOh what a tangled web we weave….
December 3, 2008 by chairboyruleswhen we try to deceive.
So Exchange is coming, it’s all been signed off, however no one is going to admit it, no one wants to tell the users, no one wants me to tell the other developers that it’s highly likely that we are going to stop developing new Notes apps. Any of those is going to cause IT management to have to answer some hard questions, the main one being, “Why are we moving to Exchange”, thus far the only answer I can possibly see that they can justify is “Because it’s Microsoft” there is surely no financial or technological justification that will hold up. At the end of the day I am sure someone is getting a bung, probably the same manager that has spent a lot of time skiing over the years I have been with the company.
The comment I was told was that “All major developments of current Notes applications will have to be reviewed to make sure that Notes is the correct platform”. My response, “Will All major developments of any current applications on any other platforms be reviewed to make sure that it’s on the correct platform” something that surely we should be doing everytime we make any major changes.
I can see that I am going to benefit from this change with new skills, however I can quite categorically say that “Lotus Notes Rocks” and new will I consider that changing, unless Lotus fuck it up completely. So whilst this blog might cover migration issues from here on, the phrase “I bleed Yellow” will be true for some time and my next move into a new job at a new Company will be to be a Lotus Notes Developer.
Reality sinks in.
November 24, 2008 by chairboyrulesSound the alarm, Exchange is coming. Yes it really does sound as though it’s happening now. I do have to ask one question, well a series of questions really, so anyone out there able to come up with real answers to any of thease??
1. Exactly how much better than Notes did Exchange have to be to justify the cost of migrating 5000 users?
2. If we are keeping Notes on as a Development platform, where exactly are the savings??
3. The real crunch – Is it possible to modify Outlook to add extra functionality to you Mail experience??? Something we have done to Notes and seems to be a business requirement.
Why???
November 20, 2008 by chairboyrulesIts been awfully quiet round here, but then again I am not sure anyone’s even listening. Anyway, I think the death knell for my blog has been sounded with the announcement of a shift to a Micro$oft equivalent product. Apparently the deal has been made the decision taken and then I’m asked to have a meeting to discuss the risk analysis of a migration. So that’s make the decision and then do the Cost Benefit and Risk Analysis. Someone help me understand this please???
From the mouths of babes (on in thease case users)
April 9, 2008 by chairboyrulesDoes this Database have an ACL?
How are you going to create that database?
If I can’t get to my database via Notes because the server is down, can I still use the Web Client?
Sametime do you really know it well??

To write perchance to create a story
March 20, 2008 by chairboyrulesOk, so I’ve been writing as anyone who reads my non Lotus/IBM blog are aware. What follows is the prologue for the novel, I will probably post Chapter 1 in a couple of weeks to see what you think and whether you want to read more. Let me know what you think!!
Title – Untitled story being written by someone who really ought to accept the fact that he is never going to see his name in print!!!
Prologue
Sarah, now that was another set of thoughts best left alone, going down that path never ended pleasantly and the 4-pack would not be enough to drown the depression that her memory usually led to. But once he had dredged up the image of her face, her shoulder length blonde hair and cherry red lipstick on lips that he had tasted on many occasion, he was again lost in the past and his focus for once was on the good times with Sarah, the times when they had danced freely and in the days when their love was pure, days before the crash, days before his life fell apart.
As he turned away from the shop and out into to the drizzle that was trying it’s best to get upgraded to rain, his mind was fully in the past and anyone looking closely might just have caught the slight smile that briefly passed over his lips before they returned to a more neutral stance. It was due to this overwhelming focus on events that should have been long forgotten that it was only his auto pilot, honed from walking this route almost every day for the last 5 years, guiding him as he walked home. It was no surprise then that he never saw the man in the shadows of a burnt out shop doorway, he walked straight past him head down and eyes seemingly staring at the cracks as he moved along, yet clearly not seeing them. It’s unlikely he would have seen the man if he had been paying attention, however in his current state of mind he had no chance, the man stepped out behind him and moved in closer, his movements clear and defined belying the dirty clothes and haggard appearance, Max never saw the man’s arm rise up and swing down towards him, never saw the short length of pipe in the man’s hand.
His first clue that something was wrong was the sharp pain around his neck and the realisation that the wet grey pavement was rushing up to meet him. Or maybe he was heading down he wasn’t too sure and as darkness drew him deeper and his head connected with the concrete slabs, in that window where most people expected their life to flash in front of their eyes, the one and only thought that was going through his mind was a single name, Sarah.
So there you go, the Prolog is out and running wild. Please do comment (sensibly) what do you think???

PCLP R7 Development
January 28, 2008 by chairboyrulesFinally after about 8 months of trying I took the R7 Development Upgrade exam, this has been becoming a running joke, every time I scheduled the exam, something came up and it just didn’t happen. This time I gave myself 3 weeks to prep and thankfully it was worth it and I passed, however for those of you still looking to take this, all I can say is familiarise yourself with the client, there are all the questions that you expect covering all the topics, although I was glad to see no DB2 questions, however it the real b*st*rd questions that catch you out if you have not been using the client day in day out, real shame when you have been using R8 since the day the beta first came out.
Thankfully this now gives me a chance to spend some time looking at new techs, so AJAX and JSON, here I come!!!
It’s that time of year when we all get a warm fuzzy feeling
January 22, 2008 by chairboyrulesYep it’s January and the great and the good have gathered in Orlando to announce all things Lotus. Which therefore means that I am still sat at my desk here in dreery Reading, still planning on leaving this place to find an employer that is happy to pay for me to fly to the US and spend some brain time with other like minding Lotus geeks. I see little point in rehashing the announcements that came up, so check out Ed Brills website among many others for the latest news. For me, Notes on the iPhone is looking good, yes I know it’s just a cutdown version of DWA, but it just ticks another box in the justification of why when my current contract is up, that spending £300ish on an iPhone is the way to go.
