But it was the other way round. We want R8 Standard so "when" we move to outlook there will be less training.

This client has subsequently been seized by the FDIC. I wonder why?

As Keith said, extol the virtues of the sidebar. You can embed ANY view from ANY database in there and can really increase a users productivity.

Your mistake was in trying to discuss the new UI.
Should have said, yes sir, walked away and then installed, via smart upgrade or email push, the 8.5.1 client standard.
But what you can do is express the benefits from using the sidebar, builtin sametime/quickr if you have them and leverage what makes the standard client better for everyone.
Like opening views or forms in the sidebar to reduce time to accomplish tasks.
Push the benefits aside from UI and you will get farther and make everyone happier.
and wonder about why they went to Outlook.

I just upgraded my wife's Notes client from 7.0.1 to 8.5.1. It was not much of an event -- she just shrugged.

The one problem seems to be an inability to give Lotus Notes a fighting chance, we have demoed Notes 8.5 to our IT Management, but have not been given the oppotunity to demo to the users, Exchange 2007 was shown to one department and given we are still on Notes 6 client they were blown away and couldn't wait to get their hands on it, I somehow expect that 8.5 would get the same reaction. The problem is that someone signed off on a huge MS License package into which MS added Exchange licenses "at no extra cost" consequently there is a level of "We must take advantage of these Licenses". However what someone doesn't seem to see is that even if we move to Exchange we will still needs Notes/Domino due to our Applications that are key to many projects. The classic which I had to point out to my boss was that even if we moved ot Exchange it would make no difference to our Notes Dev team as we don't have much to do with the E-mail other than updating the template every few years as we upgrade. I am certainly not convinced that Exchange will ever get approval but in the mean time it's unsettling and bloody annoying.

Have you spoken with Ed Brill about your company. I mean as you describe it it would be a good time for an IBM representative to speak with your team /boss and evaluate all options. Apart from that it is not a bad idea to learn something about Microsoft environments too. I don't find it very compelling but its adoption is huge and it will just add another option for your cv.
